COMMUNITY SERVICE - statement of the program
Based from the different information gathered and observations found, Brgy. Bayanan of Muntinlupa City makes a great candidate to conduct starting “the change”. Aside from the fact that transportation-wise, it is very convenient, the group discovered more than that. After examining the needs of the said community, analyzing from the details we have, and stipulating the skills we could share, different ideas were raised. Ideas wherein probably would answer, absolutely not all, but at least one of the crisis of the community.
With just the group’s spare time to be used for the said service to the community, two ideas were raised. The first is a TREE PLANTING ACT. Environmentally-wise, this is the perfect solution for our number one problem: Global Warming. Are the group’s planting efforts to create a big impact enough?
The second proposal was a Basic Computer Applications Workshop. Basically, as every member of our group is a Computer Science student, the members are very much aware of the so-called Computer Illiteracy Boom. Not everyone is well-heeled enough to get a chance to learn the computers.
In this point in time where technology is at its peak and no sooner the group expects that it will go beyond hitting the highest point, change has been common scenery nationwide especially to the industrial field which is a big factor on giving our country a stable economic growth.
Business offices became accustomed to all necessary know-how which would contribute to the growth of their companies; one good example is the shifting from doing the paper works and databases manually to the usage of computer through which in its own right earned great deal of significance, thus we should concentrate in helping children to have knowledge on how to navigate the computer and use its different applications.
Computer literacy is a skill; a talent that should be enhanced as it will serve as a good tool to achieve long term goals.
Basically, computer illiteracy is the lack of knowledge and inability to use computers and technology efficiently. It also refers to the negative comfort level someone has with using computer applications and programs.
Since 2005, computer literacy has been a major asset in the developed and still developing countries. The level of computer literacy one must achieve to gain an advantage over others depends both on the society one is in and one's place in the social hierarchy. Prior to the development of the first computers in the 1950s, the word computer referred to a person who could count, calculate, and compute. The fear of some educators today is that computer training in schools will serve only to train data-entry clerks of the next generation, low level workers of the knowledge economy.
On the other hand, some hope that enhanced computer literacy will enable a new generation of cultural producers to make meanings and circulate those in the public sphere. One of these enhancements can be in terms of a workshop, wherein professionals and/or volunteers share ample knowledge to give these unfortunate members of the society to have a background on computers, and not to get left behind.
Illiteracy is not caused by lack of intelligence. It is often a result of outside factors or disabilities that can be addressed. If we can send a people to the moon, should not every person on earth have the ability and opportunity to operate even the simplest application in the computer? Knowing how to use technology, or being computer literate, is a prerequisite for succeeding in today’s technologically advanced and quickly evolving global society.
Every person needs to acquire literacy in his/her early development, because the ability to manipulate the computers is a useful skill in so many daily activities, from writing letters, emails, and reports, and everything else. Being computer literate also develops the mind, imagination, and critical thinking skills. However, many people in the world are not computer literate, and many do not even have the opportunity to become literate in their lifetime.
One of the major causes of illiteracy, especially computer, is poverty and the subsequent lack of access to substantial materials. Realistically, students who would have gone on to continue their education past the 5th year sometimes quit school in order to work on the farm or in a factory in order to assist with the family income. Also if a family is poor, food and the basic necessities of life take precedence before books and computers can be purchased.
The effects of illiteracy often negatively impact a nation’s ability to develop its human resources. Countries with a high illiteracy rate are more likely to be disadvantaged in the global economy. If a populace is not literate, it cannot be as involved in high tech jobs. New careers in the sciences, mathematics, and technology are primarily established in countries that have literate populations.
Another major effect of illiteracy is not having access to basic information that is distributed via books, newspapers, or the Internet. This type of information could include practical advice to increase the quality of life, such as how to participate in microfinance projects. In short, illiteracy does not encourage positive social change, personal growth, or the preservation and development of language and culture.
Knowing this kind of problem that not only the government faces, but all members of the community, an action must be done. Will a community service based on teaching applications be a significant help to the future molded by the younger generation?

COMMUNITY SERVICE - strategy program
To be able to respond to our situated problem, the group had come into the decision of sharing their knowledge about computers, especially utilizing the different computer applications to be taught and including the Internet as well. The group shall be teaching the 5th graders of Bayanan Elementary School (MAIN).
In this unfussy approach, participants will be gaining knowledge so that they’ll be better and more prepared when they step into high school. The group shall respond by introducing the participants to Computer Technology, and furthermore, giving more advance information that will absolutely helpful to the in their latter use. By this, they won’t be ignorant no more, technologically-wise.
To be able to give benefit to the participants, some specific actions are included by the group in the strategy plan are as follows.
The first thing to do is grouping of the members into different committees. Each committee shall have their own responsibilities for easy distribution of tasks. The committees are Food, Registration and Teachers. Each committee shall be discussed below.
As a group, the preparation of useful and easy to understand lectures to be taught is the initial action facilitated. In order to respond to our problem, which is Computer Illiteracy, the knowledge of the participants about computers should boost. Included are the parts of the computer (Hardware, Software and Peopleware). Basic use of common Microsoft Applications, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint is also to be taught. In order to get a better overview about the use of Computers, introduction to the Internet is incorporated.
For them to follow while the Teaching Committee of the group is discussing, a special hand out is geared up for them. So even if the workshop is already long over, the participants could still get a glimpse and remember everything educated to them.
Another action done was every participant is having his own personal tutor during the hands-on part of the program. This is to assist him while he is applying the lessons he has absorbed from the teachers. The tutors will make sure what the trainees will do is right.
To ensure the safety, several students from the Food and Registration committee shall multi task. They will be in charge for the security. This is to make certain that from the minute the workshop begins and the last second it is over, no one shall be left behind and every one is still present. Unregistered students will also be blocked by the security to guarantee that the workshop is exclusive for the participants only. For when security is around, unexpected incidents would be avoided.
Preparation of snacks and refreshments, not only for the participants, but for the members of the group as well is in command of the Food Committee. It is their duty to provide every one with a meal that would satisfy their appetite. Food sanitation is also part of their responsibilities. The food committee will also take charge for the cleanliness of the site we would be conducting the service. The group is planning to have not a buffet style of servicing the food. The snacks would be lined, and given to the participants the moment they give their food stub. Refreshments would be placed in a table where anyone who would drink is serving himself. Food committee will be responsible that no one will be left not having a snack.
As for the registration committee, they divide their responsibilities into themselves. As a whole, their basic responsibility and action are registering the eligible participants. Handling out of hands out, nametags, food stubs are also under their control. In the program proper, they would be assisting the students in everything that they would do. Long after registration of every participant is over, they shall come inside the learning room, in our case the computer room, to be assistants of the teaching committee. Registration committee is also part of the tutors lending a hand for the bewildered participants.
Teaching committee is responsible on how the students will learn through their teaching. In this regard, the teaching committee shall prepare visual aids that will help the students absorb the topics well. Aside from the prepared handouts, special presentations about each topic will be made in assurance that the step by step method shall be followed. Activities about each topic will be asked for the students to do, so that the teachers could evaluate how much knowledge had they accumulated from us. The teaching process would be in this sequence: Discussion, Questions, Activities, Checking, Questions or Clarifications, Free Time for them to apply more techniques taught.
Since the group shall be handling students half their age, without doubt, vocabulary-wise, the group knows more than them. An initiative was conducted by the group in recalling easier words that the participants could easily absorb. The group does not want further perplexity when it comes to discussing. The group shall conduct this to express, not to impress. So, the use of too many flowery words is not part of the group’s strategy plan.
Also, in view of the fact that the group will be dealing to young students, boredom will obviously be a problem. In the tendency that the workshop turns into more of a seminar, the group might just get short span of attention from them. A strategy is about time management. The sequence of the workshop shall be: 30 minutes for registration process, 1 hour and a half for the discussion proper, 30 minutes for food break, 10 minutes for question and answers, and the remaining 1 hour and 20 minutes for the hands-on practice. With enough time for every action to be done, the transition of one work to another shall be crucial. The group targets that there’ll be no dead air time wasted for something not much relevant to the workshop.
Another line of attack that the group shall be pursuing is what they call inspiration. One of the main purposes of this community service is to inform them that they should just not waste their potentials onto activities that will do them no good. Like the workshop, it shall be done after their classes. So that instead of playing their usual computer games, they’ll in the group’s workshop, still using computers, but these times, they’ll be learning new stuff that will help them reach the pinnacle of their future careers.
Being said so, during the whole session with the group, the members will be telling, not preaching, the students of the positive effects that studying hard and setting their goals can do. But this tactic is not counted as a part of the whole four-hour-session. This will look much more like just a normal conversation with a friend. In this case, the participants will listen and understand what their Ate’s and Kuya’s have said. The group wants to become an inspiration to the future generation.
Included in the inspiration approach, the special presentations (mentioned in paragraph 12 of this chapter) shall include witty but substantial quotations. This is to encourage them as well. One of the included quotations is “Dalawang dekada ka lang mag-aaral. Kung di mo pagtityagaan, limang dekada ng kahirapan ang kapalit. Sobrang lugi. Kung alam lang yan ng kabataan, siguro wala nang gugustuhing umiwas sa eskwela.” (You’ll be only studying for two decades. If you won’t struggle enough, five decades of poverty will be in exchange. If only the youth knew that. Perhaps everyone will be avoiding school no more.) “Nalaman kong hindi pala exam na may passing rate ang buhay. Hindi ito multiple choice, identification, true or false, enumeration, o fill-in-the-blanks na sinasagutan, kundi essay na isinusulat araw-araw. Huhusgahan ito hindi base sa kung tama o mali ang sagot, kundi base sa kung may kabuluhan ang mga naisulat o wala. Allowed ang erasures.” (I learned that life is not an exam that has a passing rate. It’s not multiple choice, identification, true or false, enumeration, fill-in-the-blanks that is answered, but an essay written every day. This is not judged if it’s written right or wrong. Thus, it is based accordingly, if what you have done has a sense or none. Erasures are allowed.)
Just like those, inspiration comes from wit. Several of that shall be included in the special presentations. The group will not only teaching academically and technologically speaking, but shall be educating values as well. We would still be teaching, in a sense that, the group is not giving a sermon, but more of giving an advice.
Another is to encourage them to be aware that computer technology is significant in terms that their future jobs will definitely need a background in using the computers. With the entire fast-changing environment, the future successors of our generation should not only be aware, but also competitive enough that they could reach the future milestones that would them reach the apex of their abilities.
With our basic knowledge, imaginative tactics, motivating campaigns and cooperation as a group, we are looking forward to get the risk of students reaching high school computer illiterates lowered. In the strategy the group has brought together from mere thoughts to paper. And the group foresees that the cycle of strategy won’t end in paper alone, but will absolutely come to accomplish every goal and mission intended for this service.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - our conclusion
And as to rating the accomplishment, one question is asked. Did the group’s community service give solution to the problem? If yes, then to what extent?
First, let us identify once more, what the problem is. Given facts from Chapter II: Statement of the problem, the group is facing computer illiteracy. As students whose future industry is about technology, they are very much aware of the crisis that would soon affect their interests. Computer illiteracy was what the group is trying to diminish, well, maybe just lessen the victims.
If the computer is so powerful a resource that it can be programmed to simulate the instructional process, shouldn’t we be teaching our students mastery of this powerful intellectual tool? Is it enough that a student be the subject of computer administered instruction—the end user of a new technology?
Computer illiteracy is not caused by not being intelligent. For most reasons, computer illiteracy is triggered by poverty. Many poor families cannot afford their children to study to a prestige institution, or even just to buy a computer set. Without materials and sources, one would have the difficulty to learn, thus, making them illiterate. Based on statistics, 75% of unemployed adults have literacy difficulties when it comes to computer. 75% is still 75%. If we won’t do anything about that, maybe it would even reach 100%.
Having the community service whose program mainly implies on Basic Computer Applications, the group is on high hopes, that this will give solution to the problem.
Based from the feedbacks and the reactions of the participants, there is a 65% that the group had successfully gave solution. Though, 35% does not mean failure for the group. Out of 3395 presently, as of this writing, enrolled in Bayanan Elementary School (MAIN), only 36 students got the chance to be literate technologically-wise. Let’s say about 500 students in the school already had background in computers, that means, only about 536 students are knowledgeable in computers. How about the remaining?
Not to depress the efforts, there’s still the 65% that says that solution was given to the problem. Though the group would not be able to stop the fast-spreading computer illiteracy, there’s still the initiative to give a helping hand.
To the selected 4th and 5th graders, the problem had well given solutions. Their dilemma about the illiteracy regarding computers was solved. Now, these students are afraid to touch the computers no more. With enough information from the group and efforts from them, computer illiteracy vanished.
For further understanding on how the group’s proposed solutions gave help, the following statements would give support.
Students studying in Bayanan Elementary School (MAIN), does not have a subject that would satisfy the literacy needs vis-à-vis to computers. They need to have a background to computers as this would be their help in the future. As to the group’s solution, using the program, a workshop came to being. This workshop will cater to students who want to have a training to enhance the potentials within them
From this workshop, which was fruitfully started and ended, the hunger was satisfied. They left the workshop with more than just a piece of paper. This paper served as their guide while learning from the group. Not only that their tummies were filled with food, but their brains as well. They earned intellect. They even were aspired by the inspiration we are gladly showing them.
So aside from the fact that computer illiteracy, in one way or another, was obstructed, one of the group’s awareness to children who does not want to make their lives useful got the elucidation it deserves. Getting the pupils to think about their future and make the group as their role model is a momentous occurrence for the group.
Solutions were transferred from thoughts into papers. And appropriate actions were given. Computer illiteracy lessened. Still, these are not enough. A massive workshop must be done to all students, especially to those in public schools to completely freeze computer illiteracy from spreading. Also, adults who are still illiterates, despite their age, should also be included.
In general, one may not completely stop a problem in a swish of the wind. But it can be stopped from further influencing others to not give themselves solutions.
Like the objective of National Service Training Program, this is: If the youth can not solve every problem of the country, then try not to be the problem. This way, the focus of the government concentrates more onto what is more important, like let’s say, instead of you being prioritized; the government would be giving solutions already to the global economic crisis.
The group could probably not do anything about computer illiteracy. It won’t solve the problem and would not cause the group to be the source of the problem. Yet, knowing that you could give solutions and help, it’s really a task for you know.
Don’t wait till someone asks you so. Take the initiative. Though it would not benefit you directly, but it would benefit your community, even country, that would eventually sky rocket it to success. And indirectly, you also get the benefits of your service. With the group’s solution, a problem was given answers and was partly covered.

OMG. am I in charge?
Surprisingly, I was amazed to find out that we would not be doing the typical community service that other schools are offering. Being a metro aid, wherein for a fact that they clean streets under the hot, scorching sun, is what I would be doing the least. I never intended myself to do such grueling torture. If, I would just be cleaning dusty streets, then, I shouldn’t have taken a computer course. See the connection? So, having said that we would be thinking of our own service, I was really glad that we would be doing something oriented to what we like and based on our skills. It’s our time to shine, not under the sun that is! I absolutely did look forward to the success of our proposal.
Right after the set of rules and objectives were laid by our instructor to us, we then immediately thought of a good way to use our talents, hidden or out in the open, to be brought into play, in a good way that is. Obviously, what we first taught of was to teach Basic Computer Applications. This project suits our capabilities well, since we are the proud Computer Science students of this great institution. Also our flair in computer operations will be well highlighted. Tree planting was also raised as a proposal in addition to this project. We live in a city, and apparently, we know how Mother Nature is abused. Tree planting is the best solution we could think of, environmentally-wise.
Right from forming the program details of our said program, the so-called adrenaline rush came into contact with me again. Not because I ate again tons of sweets, but there’s this feeling glistening in me. Yes! I get to be the leader. Sure, I get to be in charge and boss around but that doesn’t make me feel delighted much. It is this feeling that you can motivate, not brainwash, someone to make his participation worthy. Being a leader means you need to exert more effort in the group than the others. Complaining will just get you no where. Keep on blaming everyone for the chaos created, and you’ll just end up with more problem that’s really gonna mess up all the efforts made. If someone won’t do it, don’t wait for him to realize he’s wrong. Thus, use the resources; there are more members willing to cooperate. I accepted the obligation, and then I knew I should be ready. One of the hardest things was to keep everything under control. Even though everything’s a total pandemonium, the leader should take the initiative to clean it up and return it to state of good working condition. Even it’s unimaginable to recover, the leader should always look at the positive side that it will soon be right, with proper actions that is.
As a person above 25 minds, it is my duty to create the flawless-possible program. Oh, this is easy. Set up an event, and voila! We’re done. That’s what I thought. My actual experiences proved me wrong. It seemed that going through the hole of a needle is easier than this commitment. And to add up, it’s really hard to deal with some members stereotyping me as a power-abuser (just because they did not get what they want), and an irresponsible brat (sometimes, things happen and it’s beyond my control). They don’t really know what happened and only sees the bad side of the situation, and therefore, blaming me. Then eventually getting unprofessional as some would start to pick and bicker on me. Actually, those acts of branding me as somewhat negative gave the brainwave to finish and prove them I have what it takes to organize this event.
The first thing the group has to wrap up is getting into the complete details of insinuated agenda. With all the never ending suggestions, it’s really hard to choose. To make the seemingly arduous moment a bit difficult, as the head, I had to learn to deal with people of different walks of life. This is to make sure no one is left feeling taken no notice of. Final decision was a Basic Computer Applications Software Workshop suited to handle 15 – 25 participants. Each participant would be attending two sessions in order to receive a certificate and at the same time, get to be included at discussions for further understanding. An attendance to the workshop comes with free snacks and lecture hand outs. The appeal for Tree planting was disregarded due to the financial standing of our group. In return, we would be conducting 6, instead of 4 sessions, to fill in the time requirement.
Right away details were turned from thoughts to paper; the next job is to talk to certain officials for giving us the permission to conduct our program. This, perhaps, is one of the most demanding of all. Right choice of words, correct presentation, and everything else must be considered before facing these people. With all my efforts to push through, the Barangay Officials just did not pay attention, I don’t why, but I don’t see a valid reason to turn down the proposition. They just simply don’t care. That’s what I think. Maybe education is not much of a priority to them. At that, I felt like giving up. But my principles, the hopes of my classmates for a good service and the innocent people thirsty for learning stopped me from being a quitter. With no support from the people whom I was assuming to get assistance, our group did actions just by ourselves. With them, we were just like imbeciles waiting for nothing. This is the episode on our community service drama that taught me that if every good intention, with no actions, would get you no where. Wasting all our time waiting, I decided to go personally to a school and give our group’s proposal to the person in charge, the school principal. With enthusiasm and great approval, we finally found a venue to teach & good supporters as well. It is the final decision that we would be teaching selected 4th and 5th graders of Bayanan Elementary School (MAIN). The target 6th graders can’t push through because of their review for an achievement test. We don’t want to be the cause of their failure in the said exam.
Maintaining the good flow and making sure that everything goes smoothly, I never thought it would cause me to cut some of my classes and probably, might cause me to not be an academic achiever this semester. I had to prepare everything, from the computer setup and remind the children about their workshop later. With those responsibilities on hand, having a double ganger was my only resort. Instead of getting myself into a paranormal activity, I just went with my plan: to cut my classes. As a perfectionist, I want no interruption and dissatisfaction from the attendees. It would kill me to hear such negative comments, and with me leading the pack. It was really hard, but with the entire group doing all the efforts and hardships to do a good job, the sacrifices I had were nothing compared to the compensation of touching lives and being an inspiration. I may not get a 1.00 printed permanently on my transcripts, but it is of great honor to hear the young voices saying “Thanks Ate Claire, we learned so much. We want you to teach us again. And I want to be like you.” These little futures of the world, saying they were inspired by me, really are my consolation. Those simple words that might mean nothing to others were like the heart that made me alive, kiss that made me strong; basically a sanctuary that was built inside of me to give me hope. During those times, I want to cry, it’s really a big thing for me that my efforts were noticed and given attention. I never thought I could fulfill one of my goals this young. Maybe, there’ll be academic landslides for me, but for the fact some people would get motivated & reach the pinnacle of his future career because of me, I would not regret doing those sacrifices.
Perhaps, a community service does not only teach leaders to lead, members to follow and cooperate. But it’s really the hidden lessons that are for someone to discover. Cooperation, Responsibility, the value of your rights, your duties and managing yourself to become better; those are just some of the lessons I’ve learned. Learning to trust yourself and fellow members will make a significant effect on our service. There’s much more to working together when you trust each other. Not only it reduces the pressure, personally speaking, but it made me feel the burden’s not all mine.
I did not feel sorry for being a part of these humble beginnings that went to a flourishing end. For this community service did not only pave way for us to give service to our community but reach the expectations people are looking forward to. For me, to lead the youngsters to their future successes is our ultimate goal. And accomplishing that intention really made our community service successful.

conserve thy energy
/*ugh. NSTP finals. ü */
As technologies are empowering the world, people of my generation, thfis generation that is, receives benefits and advantages. Advantages that give people the freewill to do whatever and in fact, almost do the impossible! Now, with the growing power of humankind, it is not that far to imagine that people will no longer work yet they will be able to sustain their lives. Talk about more robotic power and less mechanical will. But with these advantages come negativity that would destroy everything we have worked on. All the medals, ribbons, certificates and trophies would mean nothing anymore if this disaster would come. The once happy and blooming Earth would probably go sad and brown *yes! Not blue but brown* if we would let this happen. My point? LET’S CONSERVE.
First, I would like to give different perceptions about conservation by other people. I will also give my own interpretation about ENERGY CONSERVATION.
“Energy conservation is the practice of decreasing the quantity of energy used. It may be achieved through efficient energy use, in which case energy use is decreased while achieving a similar outcome, or by reduced consumption of energy services. Energy conservation may result in increase of financial capital, environmental value, national security, personal security, and human comfort. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy may want to conserve energy in order to reduce energy costs and promote economic security. Industrial and commercial users may want to increase efficiency and thus maximize profit.” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/energy_conservation
“A principle stating that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant regardless of changes within the system.” – http://www.answers.com/topic/conservation-of-energy
Coming from these reliable sources, I have come to realize that Energy conservation is not just merely concentrated on Electricity. Well, fuel is energy too! The food we eat is considered as energy as well for us humans. To give my own view of energy conservation, I would start it by the word SAVING. Energy conservation is saving up energy or power to do another job. It’s like instead of using amplifiers for your music wherein you would be the only one listening, you could actually use the electricity for the generation of amps to, let’s say, researching on the Internet. If these are not that essential, why waste when you can save?
Also, the energy you wasted could be your life-saver. So why neglect and throw it away? Given the situation above, your energy consumption played a huge role to save you! How come? So, what if the energy you used, electrically-wise and physically-wise, what you’ll need to do much important tasks, let’s say, a project needs to be printed. But you have already wasted it. Lesson learned? Energy conservation is much more than the unplug-your-TV-sets-from-time-to-time.
Now, let’s talk about energy conservation in a different dimension. To give a hint of what this couple of statements will be about, let me tell you. Now, it’s about how the malpractice of energy conservation will affect us.
Of course, the famous increase of energy cost will definitely affect us. Like before, people of our grandma’s & grandpa’s generation just probably paid at about 50php a month. But look at the present, families are paying at about 5,000php a month. It’s a 1000% increase! Yeah, I know, as I am writing this, I also realized how we are letting money slip our hand unguarded.
Less of the financial aspect and now, more to the Environmental piece. Currently, a large percent of the world still uses Fossil Fuels for energy. And when fossil fuel is burned, large amount of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide is contributed to the atmosphere. Thus, Fossil Fuels are not good for the environment. We all know that Carbon Monoxide to Nature is like vices to addicts. We are all aware that vices are the worst enemy of our vital organs. It will eventually kill them yet they can’t escape it because they need it. Same goes to the environment. We are responsive to the fact that fossil fuel we are using will sooner or later kill the environment, and who knows maybe including us, but we are still using it like addicts. Yes, it is because so far, the next best remedy to our thirst for energy is still yet to come. Alternative fuels are flooding the news and bulletins but in spite of everything, those recommendations are not enough. Why? The so-called thirst will never go away. Don’t believe me? Well let me prove it to you. If you’ll take away energy, people would probably go nuts! Try a day without electricity. I know it’s hard because we are all electricity-dependent people. How about a month without it? Can we, city people, survive?
Now, what are supposed to do? Wait until there’s nothing left for us to do but regret? NO!! We shouldn’t let that event to happen! We don’t want to see our future children and grandchildren to experience the ultimate price for our wrong actions. They should not pay the penalty of us doing the damage to Mother Earth. It’s not their fault that they came from generations that mistreated the nature.
Feeling guilty? Well, you shouldn’t. In fact, instead of treating yourself bad with the guilt you feel, why don’t you use that energy to do other good stuff that will benefit us all? Let’s forget selfishness and greed. Let’s consider others. And more importantly, the future.
Perhaps, only we can save the future. We can start by ending the bad habits we do. We should save. SAVE! THRIFT! THINK GREEN! THINK LIFE!
And by this, we could prevent the perfect disaster that could destroy our future.

is this goodbye?
"No Dad, not Goodbye! I hate goodbye! SEE YAH LATER." A a son with such great hopes and dreams of reaching his goals, MiCHAEL was just so annoyed to hearing goodbyes. *allergic?xp* It's quite amazing how this flick, JOHN Q., touched so many aspects in just one situation.
After that Sunday's baseball game, it has been unexpected that the tables have turned against Michael. His hearts stops working in good condition. And if his heart won't be replaced in time, it might be the last of him. This time, would the boy who hated goodbyes be saying goodbye to his mom, dad and dreams to be the ultimate body builder? Is this goodbye?
Of course, as a loving father, JOHN, did actions in order to gain his son's survival. He went to different insurance companies and even loaning agencies *if I'm not mistaken* but they just kept on turning him down. If I'm to be the owner of one of the insurance/loaning agencies, I might just probably do the same. John is just earning enough for his family's needs. How about the business? They are just playing safe, because just like John, they also have needs. Now, less on the insurance/loaning agencies and more to John. It's really hard for the part of John since those are the only hope he could cry for help. And now rejected? What's the worst that is yet to come? See his son gradually losing his life? Watch her wife cry and scream for help as she begs her son to breathe? John's gonna turn lunatic? No way, he won't let that reach reality. And maybe, just maybe, that's why doing inappropriate actions were his only hope for the life he loved so much.
Actually, at that point, I was actually starting to feel pity for John. *i thought they are one of the richies living in US. but i was actually wrong.* I realized how lucky am I to have people to ask for help. *my father, my mother, my aunties, my uncles, so on and so forth.* And also, how much of a big responsibility it is to have a family. Especially, when all you can afford is just your daily needs. I have also come to think how much does a son (or a daughter) means to their parents. How much effort, time and even money would be spent just to see their child alive, hear them talk & listen to them no matter how senseless are they talking about.
In John's mind was: HOSTAGiNG THE HOSPiTAL in exchange for his son's heart; that was his last option. Though he did not want for that to happen, he had no choice. He was truly desperate onto saving his son. So, that's what really happened. He hostages the Emergency Room in a certain hospital and there he learned how hard it is to run a hospital. With that situation on hand, of course, there's got to be a solution! That is when Media People, Police and the Government come on handy. So, why are they there? Let's see. Obviously, media people are there to get an insight of what's happening, to help citizens know what actually with the case. *but..we know what they want, ViEWERS.* Then, next, the Police People. They are there to contain the situation and prevent serious damages to occur. And finally, the Government. Of course, it is the mission to promote their citizen's good quality of life. In this case, they are there to stop the hostaging event and maybe, just maybe, help John wih his dilemma.
You see, the government is not always about politics. Even though Politics play a big role to the government, that is not where their world turns around everytime. They may do some "operations" unknown to the public and they do not stop from that.
Now, it's time we look at the "health issues" on this movie.
First, John's son, Michael gets his life on a 50-50 percentage. It's all about getting a heart donor in time! So, what did John do? Alright, I've already discussed that on my upper paragraphs. But, the story doesn't end on John's situation as a hostager. No, it does not.
On the hospital where John got his hostagees, it featured different situations where help is REALLY needed. Let's take the lover's case. They were shot (or stabbed, i guess). So they needed first aid to help them stop the bleeding. This is where, again, health institutions come to the rescue.
But back to Michael's almost dying situation, I would like to stress out how the Government, in hand with the hospital found a way to another healthy heart that would cause Michael to live for more years. Of course, due to desperation, John found another solution. *it is because his hostage-action did not successfully gave him what he wanted.* He decided to give his heart instead. He wanted to give him his life for the sake of his beloved son. So, with no further a do, John rests in an operating room bed. *is it a bed? i don't actually saw what is it. argh, blame the screen. haha* With a shot gun in his hand, he said his last words, actually, thoise have been John's last words, if a guy from another hospital faxed the hospital where John and Michael is. It could have been. *this is the CLiMAX where everyone's screaming: "John, NO!!!"*
So, let's all thank communication! For if not, John would be a goner and his heart won't go no where since a new heart donor had been found. Now, i would like to ask you: *not that I'm totally a pro for the government but just be an eye opener and see the other side of government* You think, if the government did not do any actions on John's case, would you think that Hospitals are just gonna give away free operations? NO, they won't. It would cost a lot of money. LOTS of money, it tell you.
Now, to end this... *hmm. i actually don't know what to say. Still caught up with John true love for his son.* Ohh! now, I've got it! To kill the suspense of whose heart was transferred to Michael, I would now reveal it. Actually her name is not mentioned. See, she is a girl who had an accidental car crash on a highway. She was found dead but still her vitals are good. Her heart gave way to another chance for Michael to continue his dreams and see another sunshine.
And as for John, well, he was found guilty for his case. Many private and even public organizations helped John to be innocent on his case. But, sad to say, it did not work out good. My reaction to this? A part of me agrees that John should be sentenced because a mistake is still a mistake. Just by doing heroism (to his son, that is) won't erase what he has done. It would still be a mistake that John did. But, of course, a part of me is still saying, PARDON. If only they understood whta John has gone through, maybe they would just give him Pardon. It's the life of his son that they are talking about here!! But still, it's the government's duty to enforce law among his citizens. If John would just be forgiven, it would be unfair for those who are in jail. People would not be afraid of the Laws anymore .*Agh! Forget it. ANyway, they would give us pardon. We are heros.* The government doesn't want that to happen. But don't worry, John will see his family, LATER. ;)
**Don't say goodbye. See you later. ü**
